Castaway in the Caribbean

Vacationing on the beautiful Caribbean island of Antigua, Janey Sinclair is persuaded by her magazine editor boss to do a quick island hop in order to supervise an impromptu photo-shoot for the front cover. With no flights immediately available, Janey is directed to the harbour.
Captain Travis Mathews hates tourists, although he’s not above making a bit of money off a prissy and sharp tongued young British girl when she’s desperate to get to the neighbouring island of Tortola.
After striking a deal, they set off together in Travis’s weather-beaten old boat. When the vessel comes to a sudden full stop in the sea, the mismatched pair end up as castaways on an uninhabited island.
In this fast moving romantic adventure about a vacation that turns into a tropical nightmare there’s more fun than you’ll find in any travel brochure.

A message from Janice:

I was incredibly fortunate to spend most of last summer in the Caribbean, writing and researching my latest novel Castaway in the Caribbean. I found it challenging only in the respect of being continually distracted from the manuscript by the tropical sunshine, the white sand beaches, the warm aquamarine sea, rum cocktails, and the fabulous social scene on offer. Many of these distractions are well documented on my website, blog and Facebook page, if you are interested in reading the details and seeing the photos!
For the purposes of proper research for Castaway in the Caribbean, I travelled to and explored many Caribbean islands and, despite my tendency for sea sickness, I also spent a lot of time in boats. I even got to sail around Tortola, the larger of the British Virgin Islands, in a restored schooner that had been used in the filming of the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
The Virgin Islands inspired me with the modern day setting for this romantic adventure novel because, of this chain of around ninety small islands, islets, cays and rocks in the Caribbean Sea, many are uninhabited.
I eventually settled down to write this romantic adventure story on the Caribbean island of Utila, the smaller of the Bay Islands, just off the coast of Honduras. Likened to the Key West of long ago, Utila is a quaint, unspoilt and laid-back little island. Sitting on the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, it is also a paradise for scuba diving, which is exactly what my husband was doing every day while I was busy writing this story.
Research is a valuable tool for a writer, so I do hope all the fun and adventure I had in the Caribbean has found its way into the pages of Castaway in the Caribbean.

The Echoes of Love by Hannah Fielding

Venetia is a young woman haunted by the echoes of love. She has vowed never to give her heart to another man after a tragic event and a lost love had left her with a pain so deep, she could never feel able to bring herself to love again.

Paolo is known for his reputation as a womaniser with a cloudy past. When he meets Venetia he is immediately attracted to her and quite shocked at just how much he is affected by her. Venetia is drawn to Paolo as much as she tries to stay away from him and avoid him.  Fate seems to intervene when she has no choice but to spend more time in his company. Is Venetia ready to let go of her past and give into her feelings when her head is telling her one thing and her heart another.

I was drawn into the romance and essence of this book from page one. The story intrigued me with the combination of suspense and romance to the story. The writing is very descriptive and an observing narrative of detail not necessary at times to the story. I did keep having to remind myself that it is in fact set in the modern day as there is a slightly old fashioned feel to the story like it could be set years before, just like Heathcliff and Cathy this story did move me to wuthering heights.

Redesigning Rose by Lydia Laceby

Rose is living a perfect life until she discovers her husband Frank has been deceiving her, forcing her into a life changing moment. Becky is there to help her through as she comes to terms with the break-up and rebuilding her life and a new bond of friendship is formed.  Rose slowly begins a new chapter in her life and starts to move forward and when hunky Scott enters her life Rose is attracted to him, but is it just too soon for love to blossom?

I really liked the title of this book, really clever because the leading lady is a gardener.  The story is a little bit of a slow burner but it is a touching tale of lost love finding new love.  A perfect read to pass a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Blocked by Margaret Blake

Where am I today? In a place I never thought I would be. Is this the end of me as a writer? These are questions buzzing around in my head since I have been unable to sustain one of my novels. I have three at 25,000 words and can’t seem to get past that.

Actually I can feel physically sick when I think about doing some work. It’s a new feeling for me because I have been known to have three books on the go. Why does it happen? Who knows for sure? I read of lots of cures but none of them work.

It stems I think from losing John, my husband and friend. He was always my inspiration; he would never allow me to not write. And it was great to be able to talk to him about plots and characters. Alone now there is no one to bounce ideas off. Lots of friends but it just isn’t the same. My dread moment comes when someone asks me “What are you working on at the moment,” and I have nothing to say!

My last novel The Flowers Girls has proven popular but it was the first book I wrote on my own without John’s encouragement. I can do it...if only...

Review – The Flower Girls by Margaret Blake, published by Whiskey Creek Press.
“An intriguing tale – an emotion-packed romantic suspense that will keep you guessing. Mystery, suspects aplenty, secrets, adultery, murder, passion and love intertwine to give readers a captivating read. Ms Blake’s skilful prose puts reader right into the midst of her story and I for one, am interested in seeing what she comes up with next.

Meet the Author - June Tate

I must confess that I didn't grow up with a burning ambition to be a writer. from the age of five I wanted to be a hairdresser and when I left school I trained in my chosen career. Although I did love letter writing and had seventeen pen friends in my teens. I also thought when I retired I would write a novel, so I guess the desire was just hidden for a while.

Several years into my career I joined the Cunard Company and worked in the Beauty Parlour on board the original Queen Mary for several years where I looked after VIP's and movie stars. Rosalind Russell and Joan Fontain were among my clients and one night in a night club in New York, I was introduced to Errol Flynn. We used to give gents manicures too and a Millionaire wanted to take me to Australia with him for three weeks! I declined!
I then moved to the Mauritania which went cruising around the Caribbean and Mediiterranean Sea for six months of the year. During this time I met an airline pilot who flew out to New York unannounced and proposed.

Several years later and with two daughters, one of them persuaded me to join a class for Creative Writing which set me off on this wondrous journey. I started to learn my craft and discovered that the novel was closest to me heart. After finishing a novel, I met an agent at the Romantic Novelists' Association and at her request sent her three chapters and a synopsis and then the full manuscript. After making several changes, the manuscript was sent to two publishers and to my great delight, they both wanted it! There was an auction between them and then I worked for the winner.
I chose Southampton as my background. It was my hometown and a seaport so was perfect for the Sagas that I penned. I do like to write about the seedy side of life and Southampton was a perfect background.
I prefer to write about the past. For my older readers it's nostalgic and for the younger ones, a lesson in social history. I've written as far back as the first world war up until the sixties, covering the years in between. Especially the second world war where there are so many stories.

Brides of War which will be published in late April will be my eighteenth novel and tells the tale of two GI brides and what happens to them when they move to America. Their trials and tribulations and how they overcome their difficulties. I am now working on another, as I write one a year.

I'm always delighted when I receive messages from my readers who say they have enjoyed my books and I always answer them. After all, if they've taken the time to write the least I can do is write back.

Chris Longmuir’s Life of Crime

How did I become a crime writer? Where do I start? Well, like all good stories it’s better to start at the beginning.

In the beginning there was a little girl who always had her head in a book and went about making stories up in her head, although she didn’t actually commit them to paper. Silly girl. But you see, she thought writers were magical people, and she was only ordinary, and ordinary girls didn’t have books on the book shop shelves.

Roll on a few years, and as a new mum she still had that urge to create stories, so she scraped and scrimped to buy a correspondence course in how to write (no computers then!). The only reason she could afford to do this was because each lesson was paid at a time. Two lessons in, and her mother-in-law commented “Who would want to do that?” referring to her desire to write. Thoroughly discouraged the young mum bought no more lessons – silly girl.

A short time later she wrote a short story for a Scottish Sunday newspaper, and she got a rave rejection. But she was so naive she just registered it as a rejection. Silly girl. It was many years before she understood that a rave rejection means that if the story was worked on in accordance to the advice, it would have sold. And yes, you’ve guessed it, that little girl was me.

Then life got in the way. Two children, and a career in social work took up a lot of time, but the urge never really went away, and when a night class was advertised for creative writing, followed shortly after by the establishment of a writers’ group, that urge became a reality. However, I have to admit my first attempts at writing were dire. But I’m stubborn and I don’t like giving up.

My first short story sold to People’s Friend, followed by several to My Weekly. I wrote a lot of articles, mainly historical, and sold to a variety of markets in the UK and the US. This kept me busy for about twenty years, but I still hankered to write a book.

But the one I wrote wasn’t a crime novel. It was a historical saga, A Salt Splashed Cradle. The RNA (Romantic Novelist Society) liked it so much they placed it with a publisher. Guess what? That was the year sagas went out of fashion and saga writers were being dropped by their publishers.

Not to be discouraged I changed genre, and wrote a historical crime novel, The Death Game. The publisher, Penguin liked this one, but not 110%. Probably 100% wasn’t good enough.

Nothing daunted, I turned to contemporary crime, and wrote Night Watcher, introducing DS Bill Murphy. He’s a hit with the ladies, but strangely, men like him as well. This was the first book of my Dundee Crime Series. No publishing nibbles for that one, despite the fact it won the Scottish Association of Writers Pitlochry Award.

Did I mention I’m stubborn and never give up. I started on Book two of the Dundee Crime Series, and wrote Dead Wood, again no nibbles when it went the rounds, but this book also won the Pitlochry Award, and it went on to hit the big time when it won the Dundee International Book Prize in 2009, and was published by Polygon.

The third book in the series is Missing Believed Dead, again with the popular DS Bill Murphy.

Now that my career as a writer was taking off I went on to publish A Salt Splashed Cradle, and The Death Game, and I’ve never looked back.

My life of crime is well and truly started.
