A very sentimental and moving romance story with the backdrop of Athens setting the scene. Being a Yorkshire lass, I like the connection to York in the book too and also I do hope there will be a sequel to this story. I enjoyed it so much.

Christmas at Bay Tree Cottage by Linn B. Halton

A cosy Christmas read, built around the renovation of a cottage. A cottage where once hope and dreams for the future were tragically put on hold, when life did take a whole different direction for the cottage owner Elana and her young daughter. When handsome and young Luke steps in to help with the work, foundations are built on to form feelings that can no longer be ignored and with a little help from a Christmas spirit, can hearts also be restored to let a little love in?

I loved this book from beginning to end. Pure escapism and if I had the chance I would have read it all in the one sitting. Just simply one of those perfect reads that you can get so involved with the characters that you can get completely lost in the book and forget about everything for a short while and take a break out of your own life and become captivated in someone else’s. Leaves you feeling good.

It isn’t just the sunshine and the electric blue sky, but the musical calls of the countryside that reach out to me. A chorus of low-level sounds play like a soft melody in the background. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and I feel like I’m watching a re-run of a favourite film. I could stand here for a long time simply taking in the detail and with each sweep of my eyes noticing something new.

Spinning around I look back at the villa, taking in the rustic beauty of the stonework and the pale orange-red hue of the sun-bleached roof tiles. This is, quite simply, unreal. It’s a little piece of heaven and, so far removed from my daily life that it’s hard to believe this is on the same planet. The sheer scale of the landscape literally steals your breath away. I’m a mere speck, small and insignificant in the grand scheme nature is presenting to me. But rather bizarrely, it doesn’t feel alien in anyway at all. The vastness isn’t overwhelming, but strangely comforting.

I walk back to a cluster of wooden tables surrounding a small fountain and take a seat. As I dive into my bag to extract some sunglasses, I hear a polite cough and look up at the face staring down at me.

‘Mrs Maddison? I’m Max, Max Johnson. Welcome to Villa Rosso.’

I stand, automatically plastering a pleasant smile on my surprised face as recognition kicks in. I know this man, I mean, I’ve met him before. At least I think I have, but there’s nothing similar reflected back at me, only a warm smile. The sort of smile that radiates out from mysteriously deep, hazel eyes. We shake hands. He’s younger than I expected, probably in his early forties and tall. Six foot something that’s for sure, because I feel he’s towering over me, but then I am seated.

‘I’m sorry to disturb you. I just wanted you to know that I’m here at your disposal whenever you are ready to begin. Would you like me to fetch you a coffee so you can sit for a while and enjoy the view?’

Although I knew he was British, his tan and elegant demeanour lend an air of cosmopolitan sophistication. I would not have been at all surprised if he had been Italian. He’s hovering politely and I still haven’t answered him…

It’s A Kind Of Magic – Book Covers! By Linn B. Halton

I’m sure many readers wonder why authors sometimes change the covers of their books. As the author of 8 novels, 3 novellas and 1 true story, most of my books are traditionally published. But three of them are self-published at the moment. Now the pros and cons for self-publishing versus traditionally publishing is another topic in itself, but it can also be one of the reasons for cover changes. In fact, there are a whole host of reasons and as I’ve just gone through a similar process with three of my novels, it’s a hot topic for me to talk about at the moment!

 

It’s often difficult to get the cover right first time, even for those who have been working in the industry for a long time. Remember that a cover has to reflect the content of the book, appeal to the readers of that genre AND stand out from the crowd.

From my personal experience this is what I’ve discovered:

A. Traditionally published books:

1. If there is a cover revision it will most likely be because the marketing team feel a change will enable the book to appeal to a wider audience.

2. Seasonal covers are popular – my Harper Impulse ‘A Cottage in the Country’ has both a summer and a winter cover, and I love that!

B. Self-pubbed books:

Being self-published means that YOU are in the driving seat: which is great on one hand, but on the other you don’t have the benefit of a marketing team’s experience to help you make good decisions. Whenever I’ve changed any of my covers it’s for one of the following reasons:

1. It’s a steep learning curve and what seemed like a great cover at the time can quickly turn out to be a BIG mistake. Don’t beat yourself up over bad decisions, just learn from it and move forward.

2. Trends change and while your book has to stand out, you want it to be easily identifiable as a part of the genre it falls within.

3. A cover may be eye-catching, but it might not quite reflect the subject matter. This makes it difficult for readers to connect with it and easier for them to pass over it.

4. As an author you will, over time, find a way of presenting information about yourself that reflects your personality. This style will be conveyed via your website, Twitter and FB accounts etc. You might then want to have an element of that tying into your covers. This is more difficult if you write in more than one genre, but can still be achieved by use of the same fonts/style/colours.

5. Linking books together, not necessarily because they are a series but, in my case, to give my three self-pubbed novels a sense of linked identity.

6. Sometimes a book that has been traditionally published is only contracted for a set number of years. When ‘the rights’ revert back to you, whether you decide to self-pub it, or submit it to another publisher, a new cover has to be designed.

Two things are very important to understand:

We’re all very different…

If you look at any bookshelf you will see covers you love, covers you hate, and those that make you feel indifferent. To some people it’s the cover first, when it comes to choosing their next read. To others it’s cover AND blurb. Some people will be influenced by online reviews and personal recommendations. We are each unique and another ‘plain truth’ is that you can’t please everyone all of the time. Me? I go with my heart and my gut instincts, tempered more and more by experience as time goes on.

My latest cover changes were triggered by getting the rights back for The Restaurant @ The Mill. It seemed the right time to give my self-pubbed books a sense of linked identity. But the new covers also reflect the way I’m feeling more comfortable with my own style. The important thing is to realise that nothing stands still in this fast-paced world and to embrace everything change has to offer – including new directions!

Linn began writing in March 2009 and her debut novel was published in February 2011. In a recent interview Linn was asked about genres:

"From a very young age I knew romantic fiction was always going to be my genre. I am, and will always be, madly in love with love! Whether that's love of life, a partner, or the things I'm passionate about.

My stories are about love, life and real relationships - but romance is always the one thing that holds each story together. Often there's a light, psychic touch and I never dreamed I would write drawing upon my personal psychic experiences. But as my interest and understanding in the subject has grown, it is now such a part of my life that it finds its way into my fictional tales. A Cottage in the Country by Linn B Halton

Maddie Brooks is delighted when she moves into her dream cottage. The cottage is the perfect place for her to begin her new life. The cottage needs a lot of work doing to it but Maddie can see the potential in the cottage to create a wonderful place for her to live and make the first step to the rest of her life.

Lewis Hart has a strong connection to the cottage. He feels sad he misses out on the chance to buy it for himself. Lewis was very close to the previous owner Aggie and he also had plans for the cottage. He finds himself employed by Maddie to help undertake the renovation work on the house.

Excited to begin her new life, Maddie moves in the cottage despite the mess and disruption while the repairs are been done. Things become even more difficult due to the work taking place over the Christmas holiday season and this and the winter causes more delays and complications to getting the cottage completed. Maddie soon gets use to having Lewis around and they become close, but when boundaries are crossed and confusion and communication cause more damage, will this be more complicated to fix and put back together than restoring the cottage?

A beautiful book by author Linn B. Halton. A wonderful, warm and romantic read. I liked that Maddie is a strong leading lady who knows what she wants out of life and is no longer afraid of doing things for herself and embracing a new life with a positivity and enthusiastic energy, when it could be so easily a sad situation. The location where the story is set too provides the heart of a well told and emotional love story.

Falling Angels Among us The Complete Series by Linn B Halton

Ceri has a gift, she can see Angels, and they appear to her as apparitions helping Ceri to save people and keep them safe. Ceri also has some psychic ability. Ceri attends a workshop to try and understand and learn about her gift. She works with a medium and develops her gift and learns much more about herself than she ever thought was possible.

Halton writes a rollercoaster of emotions in all her novels. They are full of romance, drama and just add that touch of a psychic mix to make the characters have extra depth and edge. This is one of those remarkable stories that will leave you thinking, and stay in your thoughts for a while after reading.

Sweet Occasions by Linn B. Halton

But with the timing never right these ‘Sweet Occasions’ may be all they are destined to have, unless fate and a Grandma’s love can give a helping hand before it is too late.

I have read nearly all of Linn B. Halton’s books so I was really looking forward to reading this book, I have found all her books to be remarkable reads and really interesting. This is a story that will not only touch your heart, but will melt your heart too. A warm and wonderful told story. The Restaurant @ the Mill by Linn B Halton

The Restaurant @ the Mill is the heart of the story. The restaurant is run by Hilary Marks and Ben Adams and not only do we get to read their story, but we have six completely different stories about characters who work, or are customers of the restaurant. Each of the characters are facing their own problems and overcoming obstacles, in their lives.

Can Hilary learn to trust again after her first marriage ended badly?  Will running the restaurant with Ben be just what she needs to move on?  And can Ben leave his own private world and find the confidence to speak and share his feelings?

The characters in the book are all completely different and are somehow connected with the restaurant. Has we read their stories we become completely involved in their lives and their emotions, taking us on a journey of discovery about people and what and how they deal with what life throws at them. I also enjoyed that there is a touch of the paranormal to the story too that also connects the characters. Just a wonderful, warm and touching read from author Linn B Halton.
