Fire and Ice by Mary O’Sullivan

Fire and Ice is an intriguing and intense story about sixteen year old Jack Cantor. Jack is an extremely bright boy, he is doing really well at school, so much more that he has been moved up above his year group. Jack could be headed for a really bright future. But something is going on with Jack, something is not quite right. Ingrid the housekeeper knows she feels uncomfortable around Jack. She found some horrible literature in Jack’s room, really violent reading material showing cruelty to humans and animals. It would seem that Jack is more interested in death than life.

Jack’s mum Ruth is a busy career woman. Ruth knows that her son Jack is lacking in social skills and is not a good mixer and that he is unwilling to interact. She brushes Jack problems off as shyness and to Jack being too bright and a high achiever. Sometimes thoughts drift into Ruth’s mind that something was not quite right about Jack, but she sends these thoughts far away to the back of her mind. Besides she has other things on her mind when she finds out that her job is relocating to America and her husband Garry is content to stay in Ireland set in his ways running his book shop. Garry knows that Jack’s behaviour has gone beyond a phase and that he was becoming more and more arrogant and aggressive. But he has failed to discuss his fears with his wife Ruth.

Is it too late for them to find out what the problem is with Jack?

Does Jack just want to make a stand for his independence?

Just how far has Jack’s behaviour got out of control?

Fire and Ice is the outstanding brand new novel from Mary O’Sullivan. The reader gets a good insight into a family’s life and the suffering, damage and devastation that can be caused when issues are not addressed or go unnoticed. The storyline is very cleverly played out and keeps the reader engrossed throughout. This book is a lot different from the other Mary O’Sullivan books that I have read and is just as good and well written. I really recommend this book it is a compelling read.

Irish author Mary O’Sullivan is a wife, mother and writer. Mostly she muddles along in a welter of multi-tasking eating chocolate and painting in times of crisis!

Knowing me Knowing You by Mandy Baggot

Kate Baxter is finding life a struggle both financially and emotionally. Eight months ago her husband Matthew walked out on her and their young toddler daughter Bethan. Not wanting the responsibility of being a husband or a father and cruelly claiming it was not what he ever wanted and that he was pushed into it.

Finding making ends meet hard she has returned to work at a firm of solicitors as a legal executive. When Kate finds she needs a date for a work function. Kate employs the services of a male escort service to accompany her to the work function. The escort turns out to be the handsome and gorgeous ex model Joel Brown.

Finding they have been set up by one of Kate’s work colleagues to enter into a televised competition called Knowing Me Knowing You which is like Mr &Mrs and having no choice but to enter they find themselves somehow through to the next round in the competition.

When Kate finds out that the winning price is 100,000 pounds. Kate knows having that sort of money behind her would be the answers to all her problems. Especially now Matthew is refusing to pay any contribution towards Bethan. Kate sees this has her chance to be financially secure and she will not have to depend on anyone financially anymore.

There is only one problem to Kate’s plan. Can she convince escort Joel to enter the rest of the competition with her when she can not afford to pay his escort fees and she needs to keep most of the prize money for herself?

Knowing me Knowing You is another great love story from Mandy Baggot. You can’t help cheering Kate on from the start of the story wanting and willing her to change the desperate situation she has found herself in. This is a romantic feel good read that’s got an excellent storyline, great humour, and a superb cast of characters. You can count on Mandy Baggot’s books for an entertaining and enjoyable read.

Haunted Southampton by Penny Legg

Haunted Southampton is the expertly put together collection of real life ghostly tales. They say that Derby is the most haunted place in the UK but after reading this book I think that maybe it could be Southampton with its ghostly sightings and haunted happenings. They include the sighting of a grey lady in the Royal Victoria Park which used to be the site of a former military hospital. The Brushmaker Arms that has got a long history of phenomena and of things going bump in the night and a mysterious person on a railway platform and much, much more. You could not ask for detail any better than what Penny has provided. The people who are sharing their experiences are named and each stories history and past is well researched and photos are provided of the places and there are also some spooky pictures for the reader to observe. There are also some interesting interviews with people who work in the paranormal field including a ghost hunter and Britain’s youngest medium.

This book will appeal to not just the people who live in the Southampton area, but to all who are interested in not only the paranormal but in history too. I have never been to Southampton but now thanks to this book, I now know some interesting places to visit and explore. This is a thoroughly fascinating read. I look forward to reading more of Penny’s work.
