I would like to welcome, a very special guest on my blog, author Nicky Wells

A Peek into the office of Nicky Wells, author

It’s always fascinating to see where people work, and I guess authors are no exceptions. So here’s a peek into my world. I am very lucky these days to have a proper, dedicated office again; for the longest time, I wrote in the dining room but since our recent house move, I have bagged a proper authorly space for me to spread out… and stay spread out.

Rather than going into lengthy descriptions, I’ve taken a few pictures for you. What’s that they say? A picture says more than a thousand words? That means you’ve just saved yourself four thousand words worth of reading!

A note on the décor though. It’s not mine. I inherited it from the previous owner. Yes, it was a deliberate choice; it was convenient, easy and ready-made. But I wouldn’t normally choose dark brown furniture, nor would I willingly install green-and-brown coloured blinds (I don’t think they show up in the photo too well, thank goodness: you’d think I’m mad). Over time, I plan to fix the colour of the blinds and probably will paint the walls too. But these are superficial details and in the meantime I find that the masculine feel (for a man’s office it was, once upon a time) kind of inspires me to get into the head of my male lead. Must be all the residual male vibes in the workspace air…

So without further ado, I give you: my office!

First, the view as you open the door:

Next, the view outside (such as it is; sadly, there’s no lush valleys or seaside vistas here… just the drive way and, if I turn, the front door, haw haw haw. I usually wave to the postman!)

To compensate for the lacklustre view of the outside, I’ve got a little bit of a glitz-and-glamour corner going on. Oh yes, I’m a regular party girl. (Well, I was, once). J

And last, my WIP wall.

Yup, and that’s it. What do you think? Does it match your expectations of a romantic novelists’ workspace?

About Sophie’s Turn

Slapper.  Slut.  Adulteress.  These are hardly words that Sophie Penhalligan would normally use to describe herself.  Yet this is exactly how she is behaving, all things considered, even if she isn’t quite married to Tim yet.  And it’s all happening because her past is coming to tempt her!  Nine years ago, she met her teenage idol and rock star extraordinaire, Dan, up close and personal.  Well, almost.  Now Dan has crash-landed back in her life.  How could Tim ever stand a chance against the charming, handsome singer?  How could she?

Sophie, now twenty-eight and a budding newspaper journalist, is happily embroiled in a relationship with Tim, her boyfriend of two years.  Until recently, she was confident that Tim would eventually propose—probably as soon as he could get his act together.  But just as Tim’s persistent inaction is beginning to cast a cloud over their relationship, Dan’s sudden reappearance turns Sophie’s world upside down.  Thus unfolds a roller-coaster of events including an ill-fated trip to Paris with Tim, a night of unfulfilled romance with Dan, Sophie and Tim’s engagement party gate-crashed by Dan, and Sophie’s professional secondment to accompany Dan’s band on their revival tour—at Dan’s special request and very much against her will.

And then, one fine day in Paris, Sophie suddenly finds herself engaged to Dan while her erstwhile fiancé Tim is...  well, doing whatever it is Tim does back in London.   What is she to do now?  Who wouldn’t give anything to meet their favorite star, let alone marry him?

Find out how Sophie gets into this impossible situation, and how she turns it around, in Sophie’s Turn, the honest, funny and sometimes bittersweet story of one woman’s entanglement with a rock star.

Sophie’s Turn is available in Kindle edition from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk and many other Amazon sites. The paperback edition is also available from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. In addition, you can obtain Sophie’s Turn from Barnes & Noble.

  1. Well just as organised as I would have expected from this well-organised lady! Thanks Nikki for getting Nicky to share her office with us. Great idea and nice to see how other people work. Nicky is a great writer and she's a real star!

  2. Haw, haw! Love it, Nicky! Mine is not quite so organised - as in post it notes are stuck all over desk, and laptop, and window! Just writing another: TIDY UP! Now, where shall I stick it?? :) xx

    1. LOL, on computer screen. I do use post it notes excessively, I have to confess. I love them! Thanks for visiting, Sheryl, and one day I'd love to sneak a peek at your workplace... XX

  3. Hi Nikki, thank you so much for hosting me... and my work space. It's kind of weird, seeing the photos here even though I sent them to you to be posted. I notice thing that I don't notice at home. For example that green cardi--I always wear it. It lives in the office. I get so cold, it's a permanent accessory. It's become part of the furniture! I hope your readers enjoy taking a little peek into my space.

Thank you also for your awesome review which you posted on Amazon. **happy dance** XX

Linn ~ You think this is organised? Bless you. There's a few piles of paper there with untidy corners, I must be slacking! :-) Thank you for visiting and for your very kind words. **blush**

    1. Hi Janice ~ glad you enjoyed the post. I notionally share the office with the kids but their computer isn't functional at the moment so the space is mine, all mine. For now! And I'm fiercely protective of my desk so when their computer is ready, they'll have to stay *their* side of the big divide, ha! xx

  5. Hi, Nikki and Nicky

What a very organised workspace... alas, since we knocked a wall down I work at the dining table and if I'm feeling particularly daring, I take all my bits and bobs over to the coffee table and work from the sofa. Not ideal, but with there only being me here most of the time it doesn't matter how much mess I make - I am, after all, the one who has to tidy it up!

One day I shall have one of those offices with an open fire, a reading area, a big, posh desk with a leather in-lay... a woman can dream, can't she? x

    1. Oooh, Suzie, that sounds great! I could do with an open fire and a little sofa right now. Cozy as it may look, this office is freezing cold!

I did used to work on the sofa in the lounge. A lot. I wrote almost all of Sophie's Run (book 2) on the sofa in our old house. It was great, except it did my back in. #youcantwin Thank you for visiting my little space today, Suzie! X

  10. Wow this is impressive - did you tidy up for the photo? (I suspect not!) Anyone who has seen photos of my office will only ever see the view out of the window - too embarrassing to show the inside!!

  11. Yes, a fellow lover of neon-colored post-it notes! Your office is so much neater than mine, Nicky. You put me to shame! Love your "Party Corner." And I'm really impressed that you have an 8-month workplan. I don't even have a 1-week plan most of the time! :)

    1. Tracie, this is a complete carry-over from work. I was a project manager once upon a professional lifetime and when the multiple-books-in-various-stages-of-completion cycle kicked in, Nicky-the-project-manager rose from an eight year slumber. Old habits die hard, as they say. It's actually proving quite useful now! (I'll make a balanced scorecard for myself next... JUST KIDDING!) xx Thanks for visiting and commenting, you rock! x

  12. Love this. So cool to see a bit of your personal life, Nicky! And yes, you are quite organized! My favorite part of your office is, of course, is the party corner...every office should have one!! :-) Thanks for the post, Nikki. Fun!

    1. Thanks so much, Bonnie. I'm planning on extending the party corner and since I wrote this post, I've started a bit of an ego wall. You know, with photos from the launch and the book signing and that kind of stuff. So glad you enjoyed taking a peek! Thanks for visiting and commenting. :-)

  13. Hi all thank you so much for joining me today Nicky. Sorry all for my delay in responding today. Nightmare my connection went down when I was in Manchester, which is one of the nearest cities to where I live. Anyone would think I was in the middle of the jungle or something!!! Anyway here I am and a BIG thank you for all your fab comments. I would love an office like Nicky's. I usually end up using the dining table!!! For my little reviews. I have a thing about stationary and note books and POST-IT notes too they are stuck all over my lap top and I think they need space and an office just like Nicky's. :)

If you are an author and would like to share with us your work station in a post please do get in touch. I could just get an office so I can do that. There I have the perfect excuse. A little short of space here at the Bywater house ... maybe I could fit something in the cupboard under the stairs... right where did I put that tape measure!

  15. Me too Nicky would love to nosey... erm mean look at other offices! Love it!! I also have a jumper I keep if I get a bit chilly and often I leave mine lying around somewhere in the house only to find my cat Spooky will often be asleep on it, so she must too see it has a keep warm tool! I really look forward to reading more books from you (Real soon I hope) in the future. :)

  16. So organized, Nicky! A model to emulate!

  17. What a fascinating glimpse into your writing world Nicky! I try very hard to be organised. After a very long time in office management (one ex-boss used to call me Miss Efficiency!) I thought these skills would automatically transfer when I started writing. However, this hasn't always been the case, half of me tends to be organised, the other half a creature of impulse. Polishing up my act has always been something on the horizon but seeing this has definitely given me a bit of a gee-up. Think a white board and some markers/post it notes are my next must have. Thank you for sharing and am so jealous you actually got to see Dare!

  19. I would love to have a white board Jo. I could put all of my many lists on there and it would give me loads of pleasure to just wipe things off the list rather than ugly crossing out lol x
