One Night Only by Sue Welfare

Helen Redford used to be a big soap star, but now her star is fading fast. So when the opportunity presents itself, for Helen to take part in a prime time television reality television show called ‘Roots’. A show which will take a look into Helen’s past, back to her roots and to her hometown where her show business career started. Helen knows this may just be a great way for her to get noticed again and could be her way back into television.

But with ex boyfriends, old friendships and a shock finding uncovered by the television show, will Helen regret going back to her past?

One Night only, is a wonderfully well written story. Which has warm humour that makes you really warm to the book and the main character, Helen Redford is very likeable. You can not predict what is going to happen in the storyline, which as a reader gives me so much more enjoyment from a book. Cleverly written so the story weaves together beautifully and comes to a satisfying conclusion.  A perfect read.

Sue Welfare was born on the edge of the Fens and is perfectly placed to write about vagaries of life in East Anglia. In between raising a family, singing in a choir, walking the dog, working in the garden, taking endless photos and cooking, Sue is also a scriptwriter, originating and developing a soap opera for local radio, along with a pantomime for the town in which she lives in.

Mini Skirts and Laughter Lines by Carol E. Wyer

Amanda Wilson is about to hit the big 5 0 in age. She decides to create a blog, and to write on her blog all about her life as she reaches this milestone birthday. Living with a husband who is more interested in watching ‘Russia Today’ than in Amanda and she knows this because she had tried to get his attention by strutting in front of the television in only thigh boots and a thong! Also living with her son who having dropped out of university and is living back in the family home, amongst his accumulating washing and dirty dishes in his bedroom.

When Amanda’s ex boyfriend sends her a friends request on facebook, could he be the one to put the excitement back in her dull life?

Fun! Fun! Fun! Is how I would sum this cheerful and feel good read. The book is written with a fantastic sense of humour that with its superb comedy timing makes this book a hilarious read that will have you laughing out loud.  The book is set out like blog entries so it makes the book a light read that although the book is over four hundred pages long it is such a good read that you just can’t put the book down, and I managed to read it in just a few hours. I am pleased to hear that there is going to be a sequel to this brilliant book and I can’t wait to read it.

Better Days by June Tate

Set in Southampton in 1954, Gemma Barrett dreams of a life at sea, and to travel and see the world. Life is not too bad for Gemma; she has a good job working in a department store. She has met a nice man called Nick Weston, and it was looking like a romance was about to begin.

Gemma had been brought up with tales about life at sea, by her father and she longed to escape to the sea. Even more so when her father announces he is leaving her mother Eve and her for good. After Eve had become bitter towards him for spending long absences at sea and that she had also become resentful towards Gemma.

Gemma takes the opportunity to follow her dream, and she applies for a job as a stewardess aboard The Queen Mary, voyaging to and from New York. When Gemma finds out that Nick Weston will also be aboard the ship and is a first officer it looks like it is destined to be. However things do not go quite so well when Gemma gets involved with Vince Morelli a gang boss who works in the New York docks. This could not only ruin her chances with Nick, but also could put Gemma’s life in great danger.

This is a story that is not all plain sailing, but with a few giant waves in the way for our leading characters to overcome. With a touch of crime added to the plot this is a really entertaining and enjoyable read from June Tate.

1923: A Memoir by Harry Leslie Smith

In the first volume of Harry Leslie Smith’s memoir, we learn a first account about what it was like growing up in Yorkshire, England in the 1920’s and 1930’s.  Born into poverty and the depression after the First World War in 1923, Harry does not get the best start in life. Harry and his father become distant and Harry takes his first job at only eight years old to help support the family. Not only is the family so deep in poverty but Harry is also starved of love and affection from his mother and neglected. Abandoned by his father Harry only companion is his older sister Mary, they dream of escaping their terrible lifestyle and for a better life.

The second part of the memoir Harry tells us about life in the RAF and about World War II Joining the RAF takes Harry away from Yorkshire and he shares his experiences about life at war and his life in the RAF.

From Barnsley, Bradford and Halifax to Hamburg this is a fascinating memoir. It is an honest account of what life was like for Harry. If like me you are interested in social history then this book is an interesting read. The book covers from Harry’s birth to him becoming a young man serving with the RAF. The book ends with you wanting to know what happens next and I can’t wait to read the next volume to find out what does happen next, and that hopefully things improve from the tragic life Harry has had so far.

A Mother’s Journey of Love, Loss and Life Beyond

A True Story

By Jennifer L. Scalise

Proof that death does not separate us from our loved ones.

In this book Jennifer L. Scalise tells the true story of how after losing her beautiful twelve year old daughter Brooke in a tragic accident, while the family where on holiday in Costa Rica. The strength and comfort Jennifer found as she had to deal with the catastrophic circumstances surrounding Brooke’s death in a foreign country. How Jennifer had to go on surviving and find peace of mind for her other two children Blake and Paige. The story tells of the heartache and the tragedy that the family went through on that fatal day to how their lives followed on from the accident as they had to rebuild their lives without Brooke.

Jennifer begins to notice strange coincidences and soon knows that they are signs being given to her from Brooke, telling her loud and clear that Brooke is alright and that life is eternal and that Brooke’s life had a greater purpose. In life Brooke had a strong link and belief in God, even when the family were not attending church regularly. Jennifer finds hidden discoveries that as she unravels she knows are not coincidences and that her daughter’s soul had been preparing for returning home to the place we call heaven. Jennifer finds comfort and faith that life is eternal and she knows that Brooke is by her side.

This is one, if not the most beautiful true life story I have ever read. The book itself is beautifully presented. The book is a wonderful tribute to Brooke and a wonderful memoir for Jennifer’s two other children Blake and Paige who also contribute to this book. Presented with photographs and thoughtful verses, that makes this book simply perfect. There are also mobile tags that you can use to access videos. So you really get to see and know what a beautiful spirit Brooke is. The book is written with pure love and will go on to help many people find peace and put their minds at rest that our loved ones are only a thought away. This is an inspirational book that delivers a powerful message.

Bon Voyage by Michelle Betham

This is the exciting brand new novel from Michelle Betham.

Aimee Anderson and best friend Jemma are two normal girls from the north east of England. Who along with Aimee’s mother, the larger than life Marcie, are about to spend two weeks on holiday together in the Mediterranean, on an all inclusive cruise.

Back in the 1990’s Aimee and Jemma had been massive fans of the popular boy band Bon Voyage. The band had had huge success and like Aimee and Jemma are also from the north east of England. The band who had since split up and gone their own separate ways were also going to be on the cruise, taking part in a new reality TV show with cameras following them everywhere as they perform a series of reunion gigs on the cruise that will hopefully lead to them getting a second shot at fame.

The last thing on Aimee’s mind is love, after just having a painful break up. But when she hears about the band being on the ship and Bon Voyage member Danny Johnson had always been her teenage crush and now she was about to see him in the flesh. With the band being out of the spotlight for a number of years and Danny himself now working as a painter and decorator will she have a chance with her teenage heartthrob?

Bon Voyage is an entertaining read, it is a story told with great humour that gives the reader a good giggle. I really enjoyed reading this book with its fantastic cast of characters.  Some of the characters who will stop at nothing to grasp onto the fame machine. The conclusion to the story makes the story come together nicely and I would read another book with these characters in. Well done to Michelle Betham another brilliant story that makes daydreamers like me believe that anything can be possible.

End of Days by Sylvia Browne with Lindsay Harrison

Sylvia Browne is an internationally-bestselling author and psychic who has amazed and helped millions through her books, readings and television appearances. She is also the author of Psychic Children; Prophecy; Insight; Phenomenon and The Other Side and Back. She appears regularly on The Montel Williams Show and has also appeared on Good Morning America, CNN and Entertainment Tonight.

There have been many predictions and prophecies about how exactly the world will end. In this book Sylvia Browne covers many of them. Nostradamus, the Mayan Calendar, religions, cults, individual prophecies and Sylvia’s own predictions really make this an interesting read.

The End of Days, the Apocalypse, the Rapture, for many decades humans have been interested to know just how the world will end?

This book is a fascinating read by the world-renowned psychic Sylvia Browne. The research that went into writing this book is spectacular and gives the reader a good knowledge of the subjects covered in this book. I found this book very knowledgeable and informative. If you have ever wondered where we are headed here on Earth, or into history of predictions, most of which have not come true, and are open minded then you will find this book interesting. It is well worth the read.

Taking Charge by Mandy Baggot

Robyn Matthers is returning home to the States, after living in England for the past nine years. Robyn is returning home to be near her father who is seriously ill in hospital. Robyn wants to take charge of her father’s rundown roadhouse and the local ice hockey team, that her father manages, The Portage Panthers.

At the airport in America Robyn meets the gorgeous Cole Ryan and the confident and sassy Robyn kisses him as they part and invites him to her father’s roadhouse that she plans to clean up and redecorate and re launch. Cole is also a talented ice hockey player that Robyn’s team desperately need as they are currently having a bad losing streak.

But behind Robyn’s confidence she has yet to come to terms with a tragic event in her past. When returning home stirs up past events and Robyn as got to face some painful memories could Cole be the one to help her take charge of her life?

This is the latest novel from Mandy Baggot and it is another smash hit of a read. The plots to Mandy Baggot’s books are so clearly written that the plot plays out in your minds eye projecting like a film. I liked that the main character for a girl was quite strong and knows her own mind and goes for exactly what she wants even though underneath she is quite venerable especially when it comes to her past. Cole makes a great hero and heartthrob in the story. Not read any of Mandy Baggot’s books yet? Well what are you waiting for, go on give yourself a good read this book is an excellent read.
