Nightingales on Call by Donna Douglas

It’s 1937 and the student nurses are into their last three months of training. But how will Dora feel when she is paired up with her old enemy Lucy? The pair had never got along, but with them both facing problems in their personal life could this bring forth a change in their respect for one another?

Jess Jago comes from a rough family background, and she cannot believe her luck when she lands a live-in job at the Nightingale, working as a maid. She is keen to do well, and be free of her family’s bad reputation, but when things start to go missing and Jess is put in the frame, an unlikely source steps in to help.

Effie O’Hara is happy following in her sister’s footsteps when she leaves her home in Ireland to become a student nurse at the Nightingale. But she soon finds herself in trouble, much to her sister’s disappointment. Is nursing what she wants to do? She must make the decision before the decision is taken from her.

I always look forward to reading these delightful books from Donna Douglas, the characters are now so real to me as I have got to know them over the last three books. It was nice to see some brand new characters introduced in this book too. They were instantly likeable, and their strong storylines in the book had me drawn in with the drama, and intense circumstances they find themselves in. I do hope we will be here again soon from the Nightingale nurses, I can’t wait to see what happens next to all these wonderful characters.

Just Add Spice Carol E Wyer

Take two leading ladies, Dawn Ellis who finds escape from her dreary life by attending a creative writing class, and working on her first novel, and Cinnamon Knight, now here is where it gets interesting. Cinnamon is the leading character in Dawn’s book; she is Dawn’s alter ego. She is all that Dawn wishes to be. Cinnamon is strong and bold and is a cross between an avenging superhero and a scorned woman and she is out for revenge.

Can Cinnamon help Dawn Spice up her Life?

It’s another cracker of a comedy from Carol. This book is written with the warm wit and humour all of Carol’s fans have come to know and love. The characters are highly entertaining and from the hilarious opening scenes in this book you will be laughing and smiling all the way through reading this book.

The Death Game by Chris Longmuir

This is a historical crime novel which is set in 1919 and it tells the story of Dundee’s first female police officer Kirsty Campbell.

Kirsty is already a serving police officer in London, but when she is transferred to Dundee her home town that she left a decade ago, she must convince her male colleagues that she is just as capable of doing the job as they are, and that letting woman into the police force is the future, but in her personal life Kirsty must confront her past.

When she finds herself involved in an investigation when young girls start disappearing Kirsty must work hard to help solve the case to gain the respect of her male colleagues and to get them to recognise that there is a place for women in the police force.

This is another superb read, by author Chris Longmuir. With its excellently written storyline that will keep you in suspense, and what I liked about this book was that I could not solve the mystery and I had no idea what the conclusion of the story would be. I am pleased to hear that there will be more novels featuring Kirsty Campbell and I will really look forward to reading these.

The Promise of Provence by Patricia Sands

When a life changing event happens to Katherine, changing her life in an instant, her world crumbles and completely falls apart.  Slowly she begins to pick up the pieces and she decides to take part in a home exchange programme, to take some time out of her life and travel to the South of France.

It is in the South of France where the adventure begin for Katherine, travelling alone she is about to find her own identity, a new person within herself, that will help her become stronger, and adapt to the major changes in her life and move on.

I am really enjoying Patricia Sand’s books. They are quite remarkable, and really do have you hooked from page one. I really liked Katherine and admired her strength and dedication to finding it within herself, to pull herself back up from such an awful situation she finds herself in. It is a book about moving on from the past and new beginnings. I also have to mention how wonderful and different the endings are to Patricia’s books.

So why not take time out of your own life and take a trip to Provence? All for the price of a book!

The Bridge Club by Patricia Sands

The Bridge club is a story about a group of friends who meet for their monthly game of bridge at each other’s houses. The story focuses on each of the woman lives over the years as they share key changing events in their lives, and the help and the support they are given from the group.

It is a story of strong bonds and friendships, the stories are deeply moving and quite emotional at times. This book is just a wonderful read that shows the nicer side to human nature. No matter what you go through in life if you have the support and love of good friends as shown in this book you can get through anything.

Boot Camp Bride by Lizzie Lamb

Ambitious rookie reporter Charlee Montague is looking for her big break in journalism. Handsome award winning photographer Rafael Ffinch may be her chance to achieve her dreams of becoming a top hack, when he offers her the chance to work undercover posing as his fiancée at a boot camp for brides. Incognito as a bride to be so they can take photos of the supermodel Anastasia Markova.

Not long into their assignment Charlee begins to have her doubts about Ffinch, and why he would need a rookie like her to accompany him?  What is the real reason behind their mission? Charlee suspects he has a dark secret he may be keeping from her and wonders if it is connected with when he was kidnapped in Columbia.

In her search to find out the truth Charlee finds adventure, danger, romance and a VW Campervan awaits her!

I really enjoyed Lizzie’s first book Tall Dark and Kilted and I was really looking forward to reading this book and I was not disappointed. This book reminded me just a touch of one of my favourite films romancing the Stone. You know the Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner one? The writing in this book is equally as good as the script to that film and the characters as likeable.   So I really enjoyed the storyline and this book is going in my top ten reads.
